Surplus to Supper was delighted that The Prince of Wales chose to visit us on 18 April 2024 at our Sunbury Cricket Club base. Prince William visited to learn about our work bridging the gap between food waste and food poverty across Surrey and West London.
The Prince was also keen to understand how we distribute to those in need via foodbanks, charities, schools, and community organisations.
The Prince of Wales spent time in the Surplus kitchen where he was impressed to discover how we produce approximately 1,000 meals a week and that in the past 4 years we have saved the equivalent of 3 million meals.
In our kitchen, Prince William’s knife skills were put to the test by our chef, and he also had the opportunity to see the process of how we prepare, cook, and pot our meals with our fantastic kitchen team.
Prince William was shown how we sort and package various personal, cleaning and beauty products for a range of projects and individuals. These generally fall into 4 main categories — Store Staples, Household, Hygiene and Gifts (for example Mothers Day), using surplus items that we have collected from long-term supply partners such as British Airways.
